Franklin's hair is wild and alive, unlike his expressionless answers when he speaks about his murder victims. This is one of the last interviews this serial killer will give. "I felt like I was at war. The survival of the white race was at stake, " he says. Franklin compares himself to a U. S. soldier in Vietnam, trained to be a sniper in the war. The enemy, he explains, were Jews, blacks and especially interracial couples. "I consider it my mission, my three-year mission. " Franklin spent 1977 to 1980 trying to accomplish that goal, committing more than a dozen bank robberies in addition to the murders. Franklin was a drifter from Mobile, Ala., who said he tried to start a race war by moving throughout the country killing people. He was sentenced to death in Missouri for the sniper shooting in 1977 of Gerald Gordon in the parking lot of a synagogue. When Franklin confessed in 1994, he already was serving life sentences in a federal prison for killing two black joggers in Salt Lake City, an interracial couple in Madison, Wis., and bombing a synagogue in Chattanooga, Tenn. He also claimed to be the shooter who paralyzed Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt. Nicklasson was one of three people involved in the 1994 killing of Excelsior Springs businessman Richard Drummond, who stopped to help when their car broke down on Interstate 70 in Callaway County. Drummond was forced to drive the three west, and then marched into a field in rural Lafayette County and shot twice in the back of the head by Nicklasson. Nicklasson and accomplice Dennis Skillicorn who was executed last year for Drummond's murder then drove to Arizona and killed a couple after their car broke down in the desert.

Missouri has joined other states in choosing pentobarbital as the drug of choice. Texas switched to a lethal single dose of it in 2012. South Dakota has carried out two executions using the sedative from a compounding pharmacy. Georgia has said it is also taking that route. Franklin was in his mid-20s when he began drifting across the country. He bombed a synagogue in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in July 1977. No one was hurt. He arrived in the St Louis area in October 1977 and picked out the Brith Sholom Kneseth Israel synagogue from the Yellow Pages. He fired five shots at the car park in Richmond Heights after a bar mitzvah on 8 October 1977. One struck and killed Gerald Gordon, a 42-year-old father of three. Franklin got away and his killing spree continued for another three years. Several of his victims were interracial couples. He also shot and killed, among others, two black children in Cincinnati, three female hitchhikers and a white 15-year-old prostitute, with whom he was angry because the girl had had sex with black men.
