Clark County is currently accepting applications from residents interested in serving on the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District Board of Trustees. The County will be filling three positions on the board as current board members' terms are expiring. Applicants must reside within the library district, which includes the cities of Las Vegas and Mesquite, and the unincorporated areas of the County. The application is available online at and must be submitted to the County by 5 p. m. Feb. 17. The County Commission is expected to appoint the new board members on March 2. The library board is comprised of 10 members, five of whom are appointed by the County Commission plus five appointed by the Las Vegas City Council. Board members are appointed to four-year terms and are limited to serving two consecutive terms. Two of the County-appointed board members whose terms are expiring may apply again. I feel because our economy and the state of our country is in great peril right now, the amount of people needing the assistance of their public library is inevitably going to rise. Individuals will most likely start to use free services more then ever in their local library such as entertainment, employment help, computer use and self help.
When I learned about this assignment I was a little intimidated because I had never created a presentation of any sort, formal or informal, not even a Power Point. Also, my college assignments were never available to anyone one besides the professor. These two fears were over come. Then I faced the overwhelming information regarding the topic I chose. There is an abundance of data about what the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District engages in to help underprivileged people. I tried to concentrate on the four main topics in my original post describing my topic, but at times more groups of people are mentioned. I felt these groups were an important part of my presentation and although not talked about in great detail, I did not want to leave them out. All in all I feel this community's library district does an incredible job for the disadvantaged in areas of their life that they need or want to better themselves, as proved by the posts in my blog. In the past I have always lived in very rural places and never realized how much a library could be used for.
