With the scheduled 2020 shutdown of Google Hire, the tech giant's applicant tracking system, there's more room for startups to emerge as the go-to tool for hiring managers. Agave, which has $1 million in funding from SV Angel, Box Group and others, is aiming to serve that need. Agave is a free hiring platform that offers job postings, hosted career pages, customer relationship management tools and full API read and write access. Agave also offers two paid tiers, ranging from $2 per user a month to $6 per user a month, which offer features like automated e-mail follow-up services, interview scheduling or pre-formulated offer letters. It's available today, but it's still early days in invite-only mode. Similar to Google Hire, Agave is focused on small- to medium-sized businesses — anywhere from 20 to 500 employees. "That's the sweet spot, " Agave founder Jared Tame told TechCrunch. "After 20 people, companies tap out their referral networks and need to get more active about sourcing talent.
For now, Mint benefits from a lack of serious competition. Quicken requires an annual subscription and remains desktop-bound, with a continued mismatch of Mac and Windows features. The free Personal Capital web app is more geared toward investment management. For all of Mint's failure to evolve and improve, its core functionality—putting your accounts in one free and easily scanned dashboard—continues to be fundamentally useful. That was the ability that led Fast Company to call it "the Axe Bodyspray of personal finance–cool, fresh, and even sexy. " Any competitor will need to provide the same quick answers to "how much did I make? " and "where did I spend it? " before scaring Intuit out of its apathy. Or, as Patzer says of the app, which he continues to use himself: "It solves a real need. "
He points in particular to the lack of integration between Mint and TurboTax, saying, "I had a dream that TurboTax would take you about five minutes. " The success of TurboTax, which Intuit zealously defends by lobbying to stop governments from offering their own tax-prep apps, may help explain why Mint has gone neglected. Patzer estimates that TurboTax generates 10 to 20 times the revenue of Mint. Intuit doesn't break out that proportion—Heineman says, "Anything you have heard from Aaron or others is just speculation"—but its executives have left Mint out of prepared remarks for the company's last five quarterly-earnings calls. In its 2019 fiscal year, Intuit's consumer sector (basically, Mint and TurboTax) generated $2. 775 billion in revenue, versus $3. 533 billion for its small business and self-employed division, which is dominated by its QuickBooks accounting software. As software that people pay for—annually—TurboTax follows a business model that Intuit mastered decades ago. By contrast, Patzer says, Mint's referral fees for sign-ups through the app yielded "lumpy" income.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Facebook is trying to coax "news deserts" into bloom with the second major expansion of a tool that exposes people to more local news and information. But the social network confesses that it still has a lot to learn. The social media giant said Thursday it is expanding its "Today In" service to 6, 000 cities and towns across the U. S., up from 400 in its previous iteration. Launched in early 2018, the service lets Facebook users opt into local news and information from local organizations. Such news can include missing-person alerts, local election results, road closures and crime reports. The tool lives within the Facebook app; turning it on adds local updates to a user's regular news feed. In areas with scant local news, Facebook will add relevant articles from surrounding areas. The service won't automatically turn on for people even in the areas it serves, which could limit its reach. So far, Facebook says, 1. 6 million people have activated Today In. They receive news from some 1, 200 publishers every week.
